Das klassische Castell’Arquato Vernasca-Bergrennen um den Silver Flag Pokal, nahe Parma, in der norditalienischen Provinz Piacenza, wird vom „Club Piacentino Automoto d'Epoca“ veranstaltet und hat sich deutlich als wichtiges Event seiner Art, über Südeuropa hinaus, etabliert. Alles, was in dieser Welt an Fahrern und Boliden im Rennsport seit den 50er Jahren je einen Namen hatte, ist die haarige 8,5 Kilometerstrecke mit ihren Nadelkurven nach Castell’Arquato bereits hinauf gedröhnt. Heuer war es der Gesang der roten Abarth-Boliden, der die Luft erfüllte und dem Kurs eine besondere Klangfarbe gab. Immerhin, es war das spektakuläre Feld von 74 Abarth Fahrzeugen, das die Szene dominierte. Die bekanntesten Abarth-Sammler, wie Engelbert Möll aus der Schweiz und Leo Aumüller aus Deutschland verliehen der Szene einen besonderen Glanz. Carlo Abarths Witwe Anneliese aus Kitzbühel ließ es sich nicht nehmen, jeden einzelnen Abarth Piloten persönlich zu begrüßen. Und sie traf einen alten Freund aus den Tagen Carlo Abarths: Ex Fiat-Vorstand Paolo Cantarella.
 
The Vernasca Silver Flag is an 8.5 km hillclimb in the hills near Parma. Organized by the renown „Club Piacentino Automoto d'Epoca." From 1953-1972, the Vernasca Silver Flag was part of the Italian Hillclimb Championships where Ferraris, Porsches, Abarths and Alfas tortured themselves on a course with narrow roads and with a 1000 feet climb. Since its 1995 revival, the Vernasca Silver Flag hillclimb established itself as one of the the most spectacular historical Hillclimb races in Europe.
 
The startline is at the bottom of a long valley right in the center of Castell d' Arquato. It is just like in those days oft the grand old Italian road-races where spectators are millimetres away from the action. Cars start at 30 second intervals with the order to reduce overtaking. But thats rather a hypothetical issue. Overtaking, that is a matter of emotions of cause. After the three-miles-"straight", the next spectacular challenge is the centre of Luganiano, where a tight 90° left-hander and a downhill blast thrills the spectators. The following 1000 feet climb is a series of blind turns, some sweepers, some hairpins. That combination requests high performance of driver and technique unisono.
 
Un evento famoso a livello internazionale per la sua tradizione, promosso dalla "Club Piacentino Automoto d'Epoca" per tenere in vita i gioielli di ingegneria che vi partecipano ogni anno e soprattutto la passione di chi li possiede e vuole condividere con noi spettatori la loro bellezza unica, irriproducibile: c’è qualcosa di diverso nell’aria in ogni Silver Flag, saranno forse i pit-stop, nei quali si possono osservare da vicino tutte le auto, forse il rombo dei motori e l’adrenalina che inizia a scorrere nelle vene, o semplicemente l’idea di rivivere un evento che si ripete da molti anni e che ha come sfondo uno dei borghi medievali più belli del mondo, Castell’Arquato.
